One of those frameworks involves Dorothea Orem's Self Care Model by which Orem (1971) developed a definition of breastfeeding that highlights the customer's self treatment needs. Orem defines self-care as a learned goal-orientated activity directed towards the self with the intention to maintaining life, health, creation and wellness (Orem, 1991). Thus, the outcome that Orem's theory worked towards is usually to help the patient accomplish self-care. In accordance to Orem, nursing proper care is necessary if the patient is unable to fulfill natural, psychological, developmental or interpersonal needs.
